Feed your Freshwater Tropical Fish frozen foods twice a week... and they'll love you!

Feeding frozen freshwater tropical fish foods twice a week is a nutritious way to vary your fishes diet. Your freshwater tropical fish will nearly frenzy each time you give them frozen foods.

There are several different types of frozen tropical fish foods available for your freshwater fish. Frozen foods are packaged in either flat packs or little "ice cube" trays of individual servings. From a convenience standpoint I've become fond of the little trays.

Let's take a look at the different types of frozen foods

Beef Heart
Beef heart is made from cow hearts. It is a high protein food for carnivores and omnivores like Discus, Cichlids, and Catfish.

Beef heart is a bit messy in the tank... so be sure to feed only the amount that you know your fish are going to eat. Some say that beef heart will pollute your tank. This is probably so if you over feed! Beef heart could be feed the night before tank cleaning day... this way you'll vacuum up any leftovers and they won't decompose in the aquarium.

I make my own beef heart either out of cow or elk hearts. Cut up the heart into small cubes. Remove all the fat and veins that you can. Then put it in the blender on the chop setting. This can be tricky... you don't want to turn the heart into mush, nor do you want the chunks to be to large. Once the heart has been chopped into bit size pieces, dump it out on the counter and pick out any fat and veins that you may have missed earlier. Then I mix in some powdered tropical fish vitamins. Next I put it in ziplock baggies and flatten them out to about 1/8" to 1/4" thick. One beef heart will make several bags and will last a long time... maybe give some to your aquarist friends.

Bloodworms
Bloodworms are also know as Red Mosquito Larvae. They are the larvae of an insect in the midge family Chironomidae.
These larvae actually contain hemoglobin... hence the name bloodworms.

Bloodworms are high in iron and is an excellent frozen food supplement for nearly all freshwater tropical fish.

Community Menu
Community Menu was developed by San Francisco Bay. It is a blend of several natural foods in cube form. One of its ingredients is brine shrimp that has been fortified with vitamin C.

If you only want to buy a single frozen food for your freshwater tropical fish... Community menu is probably the best choice.

Discus Delight
Discus delight is very similar to beef heart except its made with turkey hearts. They say that turkey heart is easier for fish to digest.

Discus delight is a good choice for Discus, Angel fish, Cichlids, and any other meat eating fish. Catfish like it too!

Emerald Entree
Emerald Entree is also a San Francisco Bay product. Its dark green in color and looks like finely chopped green vegetables.

Here's what the San Francisco Bay web site has to say about it.

Although formulated for marine fish, this diet has been shown to be an excellent diet for freshwater fish as well. Fish that rely on micro-algae and vegetable matter as a main nutrition source will benefit from Emerald Entrée's complete nutritional package. We added Mysis (opossum shrimp) as a natural attractant. Emerald Entrée is fortified with omega-3 fatty acids such as EPA and DHA, which are proven to be important for optimal growth and disease prevention in marine fish.

Emerald Entree is a good choice for Algae eaters, Barbs, Goldfish, Gouramis, Bala Sharks, Silver Dollars, and some Cichlids.

Freshwater Multi-pack
The Freshwater Multi-pak is a mixture of Discus Delight, Emerald Entree, Bloodworms, and Spirulina enriched Brine Shrimp.

If you have a good mix of fish in a community tank, the freshwater multi-pack is a convenient choice.

White Mosquito Larvae
White Mosquito larvae are also called Glassworms. They are very high in protein and fatty acids. Almost 3 times that of bloodworms.

Nearly all freshwater tropical fish will eat white mosquito larvae. There an excellent choice for community tanks and species tanks.
